Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the lifeblood of animal rescue. Can you set aside some time to help in the rescue process? There are many ways in which you might be of service. If you are interested, please fill out the volunteer application (.doc) and return it to the shelter.

Adoption Counselor: During our open hours, Adoption Counselors are available to take adoption applications, discuss pet care, aid in the selection of the appropriate animal and complete the adoption process. Adoption Counselors may also do laundry and keep cages and common areas clean. Our shelter is a busy atmosphere and volunteers who wish to be Adoption Counselors should be good at organization and multi-tasking.

Kennel Attendant: Each morning the shelter must be cleaned thoroughly. Each cage is sterilized and bedding and litter are changed. Floors are washed and laundry is done. Kennel Attendants may also be asked to administer morning medications, provided they are qualified to do so. Volunteers who wish to be Kennel Attendants should be available at least one morning every other week for at least 3 hours. Start time can be as early as 6 a.m. or as late as 8 a.m. Would you love to start your day by serving MEOW’s resident cats?

We also have volunteer Kennel Attendant positions available during business hours. Kennel Attendants are on hand to help maintain the cleanliness of the shelter for the public, assist with the care of the cats, and help to ensure that the shelter is tidy and the cats are comfortable at closing time.

Foster Care: Underage kittens and puppies, sometimes with mothers, sometimes orphans, are placed in foster homes until ready for adoption. Animals that are ill or injured or have special needs are also fostered. They may stay for a day or for several weeks. A foster home must be able to provide a safe, warm place isolated from other pets. The animals need lots of human contact to help develop confidence and social skills and some may require medication. In spring and summer many additional foster homes are needed to care for the hundreds of litters of kittens we rescue each year. Learn more.

How Teens Can Help: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to help at the shelter. But there is so much more that young cat lovers can still do to help us out. For a list of fun things you and your family can do to help MEOW out, check out Teen Opportunities.
